Disruption caused by Iceland's volcanic ash cloud has highlighted the need for companies to take out supply chain risk insurance, according to State of Flux's managing director, Alan Day.
Commenting in an article published in 'The Times', Day said that new insurance products - such as the one launched recently by Zurich - were one option for mitigating natural disasters and other supply chain risks.
"The disruption caused to air freight by Iceland's volcanic ash cloud has raised the profile for the need of this kind of insurance," Day said. "Events like this make supply chain insurance more important."
The alternatives, he added, "are living with the risk or changing to a supply chain with fewer risks".
