IACCM and State of Flux Launch Accredited Qualification in Supplier Relationship Management

27 May 2010

Pioneering programme will equip SRM practitioners with the core skills and knowledge they need to develop successful, collaborative customer-supplier relations

LONDON & EDINBURGH, 26 May 2010 – The International Association for Contract and Commercial Management (IACCM) and State of Flux, a procurement and supply chain consultancy, today announced the launch of one of the world’s first internationally recognised and accredited qualifications in supplier relationship management (SRM).

The pioneering programme is designed to equip practitioners with the skills and knowledge they need to implement SRM practices effectively within their organisations. Completion of the programme will lead to individual certification and a “licence to practise SRM”.

SRM is emerging as both an important business activity and a professional discipline within major organisations around the world. Research evidence suggests that SRM can deliver significant tangible benefits in addition to those achieved through world-class strategic sourcing, negotiation, and contract and performance management.

Despite this potential, investment in SRM training remains limited and there has not been an internationally accredited qualification that recognises excellence in this area. To fill this gap, the IACCM has partnered with State of Flux to design a comprehensive training programme.

Relationship management requires a blend of technical capabilities – for example, in process and organisational design, and structuring of appropriate contracts and future-facing measurement systems – and key behavioural competencies such as communication, influencing and trust building.

Participants on the programme, which will consist of both face-to-face training and e-learning, will learn how to:

  • Prepare convincing SRM business cases
  • Design an effective governance structure
  • Create and implement a communications plan
  • Engage key stakeholders and supplier executives
  • Develop metrics that drive successful behaviours
  • Encourage positive approaches to change
  • Negotiate with strategic partners
  • Devise appropriate contractual arrangements
  • Track and report SRM benefits
  • Resolve conflicts and issues collaboratively

Commenting on the programme’s launch, Tim Cummins, CEO of the IACCM, said: “As companies become increasingly reliant on external partners, SRM is a critical discipline that can ensure successful, innovative and incentive-based relationships.

“On the sell-side, companies have invested in relationship skills for many years; today, with such dependence on the performance of key suppliers, it is unacceptable not to build similar skills to oversee buy-side relationships.

“It is essential for organisations to develop a consistent process led by dedicated and trained SRM professionals,” said Cummins. “Simply putting a few people in place and calling them supplier relationship managers is not going to fix anything. To be effective, it is essential that those appointed have a clear sense of their role and mission and have been equipped with the skills and knowledge required to perform.

“An external certification programme means that they – and their colleagues – can be assured that they have reached a benchmarked standard, and along with that comes status and a lasting connection to external research and best practice.”

Alan Day, Managing Director of State of Flux, added: “We are delighted to have partnered with the IACCM to design and deliver this ground-breaking SRM training programme. Our discussions with organisations in many sectors suggests there is strong demand for this programme, and we believe that an internationally accredited qualification will be extremely beneficial for current and aspiring SRM practitioners.”

The first programme will begin in September 2010 and pre-registration is available now.
